WHO recommends lower thresholds for Asian populations

Enter your weight and height above to calculate your BMI.

BMI is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by the square of your height in metres:

BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)^2

Standard WHO cutoffs classify BMI as: Underweight (<18.5), Normal (18.5-24.9), Overweight (25-29.9), and Obese (>=30).

Asian BMI cutoffs use lower thresholds - Overweight >=23 and Obese >=27.5 - because research shows Asian populations carry metabolic risk at lower BMI values compared to European populations. The World Health Organization and several Asian health authorities now recommend these adjusted thresholds for people of Asian descent.

Important limitation: BMI does not distinguish between fat and muscle mass, and does not account for where fat is distributed in the body (central/abdominal fat carries higher metabolic risk). It is a screening tool, not a diagnostic measure.
