Fasting Risk Estimator
Based on IDF-DAR guidelines - assess your risk level before fasting (religious, intermittent, or medical) and get personalized safety guidance.
Educational estimator only - not medical advice.
This calculator uses the IDF-DAR (International Diabetes Federation - Diabetes and Ramadan) risk stratification framework, adapted for general and religious fasting. Each risk factor adds points to a cumulative score:
| Risk Factor | Points |
|---|---|
| Type 1 Diabetes | +3 |
| Insulin use | +3 |
| Sulfonylurea use | +2 |
| 3+ hypo episodes (past 3 months) | +3 |
| 1-2 hypo episodes (past 3 months) | +1 |
| HbA1c above 9% | +2 |
| HbA1c below 6% (hypo risk) | +1 |
| Kidney disease (CKD Stage 3+) | +2 |
| Diabetes complications present | +1 |
| SGLT-2 use (DKA risk during fasting) | +1 |
| Heavy physical activity | +1 |
Note: Pre-diabetes without other complications contributes 0 additional points - it is generally lower risk for fasting.
Managing diabetes during fasting requires careful planning around medication timing, monitoring frequency, and knowing when to break a fast safely. FOD Mature Chapter 17 covers special situations including fasting, travel, and illness in full detail.
FOD Mature - Chapter 17This tool is for educational purposes only and does not constitute medical advice. Fasting decisions should always be made in consultation with your healthcare provider, particularly if you use insulin or medications that carry a hypoglycemia risk. Never stop or adjust medications without medical guidance.
