The Glycemic Index (GI) alone doesn't tell you much - a small portion of a high-GI food may raise blood sugar less than a large portion of a medium-GI food. Glycemic Load (GL) combines both GI and the actual carbohydrate amount in your serving:
The estimated blood sugar rise uses an approximation model:
GL zones: Low (<=10), Medium (11-19), High (>=20). Many factors modify the real-world response - your insulin sensitivity, meal composition, activity level, gut microbiome, and more. Always verify against your own CGM or blood glucose readings.
Time-to-peak is estimated at 30-45 minutes for high-GI foods, 45-60 minutes for medium, and 60-90 minutes for low-GI foods.
Discover how GI and GL apply to everyday Indian foods, restaurant meals, and packaged snacks - and why two foods with the same GI can have very different blood sugar effects when eaten in real portions.
