Monthly HbA1c reduction rates are based on published clinical trial data for each intervention type. The calculator uses the midpoint of each range and applies a tapering model - reductions are faster early and slow as HbA1c approaches target:
Why does it take 90 days to see a full HbA1c change? HbA1c measures the percentage of haemoglobin with glucose attached. Red blood cells live approximately 90-120 days, so your HbA1c reflects the last 2-3 months of average glucose. Even if you lower your glucose today, your HbA1c won't fully reflect that for up to 3 months.
Plateaus are normal. Most people see the fastest improvements in the first 3 months, followed by slower progress. This is partly physiological and partly because the biggest, easiest changes are made first. Don't get discouraged - consistency over time is what matters.
Chapter 16 of FOD Starter covers how HbA1c responds to different treatments, what realistic expectations look like, and how to stay motivated through the slower phases of improvement.
FOD Starter - Chapter 16This calculator provides approximate projections for educational purposes only. Actual HbA1c changes vary significantly between individuals based on medication response, adherence, baseline health, and other factors.
