Hyperglycemia Frequency Calculator
Calculate your Time Above Range (TAR) - how often your glucose exceeds 180 mg/dL or 250 mg/dL - and see how you compare to ADA targets.
Educational estimator only - not medical advice.
Typical: ~12/day with finger-sticks; 288/day with CGM (5-min intervals)
Hyperglycemia frequency is measured as Time Above Range (TAR) - the percentage of readings exceeding the threshold:
The ADA/ATTD consensus targets: TAR Level 1 (above 180 mg/dL) <25% for most adults with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. TAR Level 2 (above 250 mg/dL) <5%.
Acute effects of hyperglycemia include thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, and blurred vision. Chronic effects include damage to kidneys, nerves, eyes, and cardiovascular system - the major complications of poorly controlled diabetes.
Common causes include excess carbohydrate intake, insufficient insulin or medication, illness, stress, lack of physical activity, and the dawn phenomenon. Identifying your personal trigger pattern is the first step to improvement.
Chapter 6 of the FOD Starter Series covers hyperglycemia - its causes, symptoms, short-term and long-term effects, and the practical steps you can take to spend more time in your target range.
