Fasting blood glucose target across your pregnancy. The green band shows the recommended range - values should stay within this zone.
Fasting target range across pregnancy (mg/dL)
Targets are derived from the ADA Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes and NICE guidelines NG3 for diabetes in pregnancy. These are the most widely adopted clinical standards:
ADA targets (gestational diabetes):
Fasting <95 mg/dL (5.3 mmol/L) * 1-hr post-meal <140 mg/dL (7.8 mmol/L) * 2-hr post-meal <120 mg/dL (6.7 mmol/L)
NICE targets (pre-existing diabetes):
Fasting 70-95 mg/dL (3.9-5.3 mmol/L) * 1-hr post-meal <140 mg/dL (7.8 mmol/L)
Targets may be individualised by your care team based on your history, hypoglycemia risk, and fetal growth. Insulin-treated pregnancies and multiple pregnancies require additional specialist input.
Blood glucose management in pregnancy requires the tightest glucose control of any life stage. Understanding the "why" behind these numbers helps you stay motivated and respond to challenges. The FOD series covers pregnancy and diabetes comprehensively.
Deep Dive: FOD TrilogyDiabetes management in pregnancy requires specialist oversight. These targets are educational reference values based on ADA and NICE guidelines and must be personalised by your diabetes care team and obstetrician. Do not adjust insulin doses without medical supervision. Contact your healthcare team immediately if blood glucose is persistently outside target range.
