Diabetes Remission Probability
Based on DiRECT trial data, estimate the probability of achieving type 2 diabetes remission through weight loss - defined as HbA1c below 6.5% without diabetes medications for 3 months.

0 = recently diagnosed
Range: 5.0-16%
DiRECT target: 15 kg
DiRECT range: 27-45
Range: 18-90 years
This calculator is based on outcomes from the DiRECT trial (Diabetes Remission Clinical Trial), which found that ~86% of participants who lost 15+ kg within 6 years of diagnosis achieved remission. Adjustments are applied for individual factors:
Remission is defined as HbA1c below 6.5% without glucose-lowering medications for at least 3 months. This calculator applies to type 2 diabetes only - it is not applicable to type 1 or LADA. Even a low probability does not mean remission is impossible - every individual's response differs.
Chapter 9 of the FOD Mature Series covers the evidence for type 2 diabetes remission - what the DiRECT trial found, how to approach low-calorie dietary intervention safely, and realistic expectations for long-term remission maintenance.
FOD Mature Series - Ch. 9This calculator provides an educational estimate based on published DiRECT trial data. It is not a clinical prediction tool and does not account for all individual factors. Diabetes remission attempts should only be undertaken with close medical supervision. Do not stop medications without consulting your healthcare provider. This calculator applies to type 2 diabetes only.
